An Edutopia.org article states that “Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork. A 2005 report by the Rand Corporation about the visual arts argues that the intrinsic pleasures and stimulation of the art experience do more than sweeten an individual's life -- according to the report, they "can connect people more deeply to the world and open them to new ways of seeing," creating the foundation to forge social bonds and community cohesion.” Here at SPHS we strongly believe in the power or art. We offer a full range of art courses meant to build creativity and foster artistic exploration in students.
Art @ SPHS
Art and Design: This course is as an introduction to art and design, its process and its values. There will be an importance placed on the process used in any art-based project:
- understanding the task,
- brainstorming ideas,
- sketching,
- peer feedback,
- revision of ideas,
- approval,
- final product and
- Writing an artist’s statement.
Students will be repeating this creative process for each of the projects assigned to them.
Art Portfolio: This course is as an introduction to the basics of art, using different mediums. There will be importance placed on:
- the Elements and Principles of art, and
- The artist’s critique and statement.
Students will explore a variety of media through:
- collage,
- printmaking,
- photography, and
- painting
Students will learn to layer, re-contextualize, and combine materials while creating meaningful works of art.
Paper Craft: This course serves as an introduction to the art of paper craft, its techniques and its process. Importance is put on techniques, which can be used in any paper project:
- understanding the task,
- following directions,
- the final product and
- Writing an artist’s statement.
Students will be repeating this creative process for each of the projects assigned to them.
